What is Elf On The Shelf?

A new Christmas tradition, Elf on the Shelf, is stealing the spotlight from classic holiday activities like baking, carolling, and building gingerbread houses. This mischievous Elf visits homes before Christmas, reporting children’s behaviour to Santa. Parents add to the fun by placing the Elf in creative scenes or hiding it for kids to find. With adorable outfits and accessories, this tradition adds a fresh twist to the festive season!

Your Elf arrives between November 24 and December 1, during Scout Elf Return Week, when Santa’s helpers leave the North Pole to spend the holiday season in your home. Make their arrival unforgettable — they bring festive magic and serve as a gentle reminder for children to stay on their best behaviour! Once your Elf arrives, it heads to the North Pole each night to report to Santa, returning before the kids wake up. That’s when the real fun begins! Every morning, children eagerly search for the Elf in its new spot.

ELF ON THE SHELF RULES

• No Touching the Elf: Once your Elf arrives, children must not touch it. Touching the Elf may cause it to lose its magic, making it unable to report to Santa.
• The Elf Can’t Move While You’re Watching: The Elf is only active at night when everyone is asleep. During the day, it stays perfectly still wherever it landed.
• The Elf Reports to Santa Every Night: Each night, the Elf flies back to the North Pole to report on the children’s behaviour and returns by morning to a new hiding spot.
• No Talking to the Elf: While children can tell the Elf their wishes and secrets, the Elf doesn’t respond. Its role is to observe and report.
• The Elf Leaves on Christmas Eve: After reporting to Santa for the final time, the Elf returns to the North Pole until next year, making room for Christmas magic to fill the house.
